While he was home on leave in June, 2005,  he was asked by his principal if it was worth it to be over in Iraq.  Hayes said, “You should see the kids going to school over there. Our community held a 3K to honor our veterans.  I decided that I would participate in this event too.  This time, the weather was very cold and damp.
